Flex Mathews, Ardamus, and Mic Myers Freestyle

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgC-AzXQUm0&hl=en_US&fs=1]

Flex Mathews and Ardamus are two of the best rappers I’ve seen around DC. They’re ability to freestyle on the spot, whenever, to whatever is really dope! Once again, Flex brought me to this radio station and gave me another great opporunity to show my skills and meet people.

“Something Wrong” Music Video

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bPFVYVR1RY&hl=en_US&fs=1&]

This was the single off our last album “Play It By Ear” which was released September, 2009. We shot the music video at Blue Ridge Studio in Ashville, NC. This was a big budget studio where films such as Last of the Mohekians and parts of Forest Gump were filmed at. Ian Flanegan was the director and had a staff of around 10 interns working around the clock for three days in a row. After getting about 4 hours sleep in three days trying to finish everything, DJ Complete and I went home hoping to see the finished video a few months later. Then disaster struck…

Blue Ridge Studio changed ownership, and the new owners took control of all the equipment on property (including the computer with our footage). Ian spent the next four months fighting with them just to get it back, and eventually was able to do so. Without the studio editing equipment though, he was unable to finish the project. So I picked up the phone and called superman himself, Andrew Zenn, who directed and produced my last two music videos. He agreed to pick the project up and bring it back to Boston to finish editing it.

Here we are, almost a year and a half has pasted since we filmed this thing, and we are finally putting it out. Thank you to everyone at the studio who stayed up late building sets and filming, and a special thanks to Ian and Andrew for being persistent and patient enough to get this project done. We lost a lot of footage along the way, and I am no longer broke trying to find a job, but this song still rings true on many levels.

Mic Myers Feature: King Strick “Fortune & Fame”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amEIIDrzH9U&hl=en_US&fs=1&]

King Strick and I went to Chapel Hill High School together a long time ago. He was one of four emcees at the time actually putting out content, and is still doing his thing. He is living out in Las Vegas now and grinding as hard as anyone I know. This track isn’t done yet, I actually just wrote the verse tonight and decided to share it with you. I got a lot of features coming out so look for this as a new topic!

Neeko is a producer that also went to high school with me. Him and LG are probably the best producers I know from Chapel Hill. Neeko has HITS with Strick and various other artist. Check their music out:

Flex Mathews is my Hero!

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KeUvIizknw&hl=en_US&fs=1&]

Flex Mathews performed at a Crab Festival in VA this weekend with a live band, and brought me along. He got me on stage three times throughout the night and let me rock! This whole video, and his whole show period, was a freestyle. The man is crazy.

There is always someone who is better than you. The weak refuse to acknowledge this, the smart learn from it. Flex Mathews is known around DC for his ability to rap to anything, about anything, and at anytime. If someone in the city doesn’t think he’s the best, I guarantee you they put him in the top 3. When I first moved to DC I entered four MC competitions, got to the final round of each one, and lost to Flex every time. If you can’t beat them, join them… about two months later Flex and I were touring around NC. Now he takes me all over the place, letting me perform during his sets, and introducing me to all the people I need to know. Find the person that is better than you, and do everything you can to learn from them. Flex and I are working on a CD together right now.

All In Me- Truth MC & Mic Myers

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMak3gDgNKM&hl=en_US&fs=1&]

I met Truth MC at a house party in Arlington. We started a freestyle cypher in the backyard, and got the crowd so hype the cops got called (sorry Molly!). I brought him to my studio last week to help Flex Mathews and I finish a track, and today I went over to his house and recorded this song. It hasn’t been mixed fully, but I’m going to share it anyways. Truth and I will definitely be doing more work in the future.

“I’m on tour looking with blind eyes, thinking how time flies, thats the place where my mind hides…”

Full Circle- My First NC & VA Show

I was 17 when I did my first show. It wasn’t even my show, I was just doing a song with Endless Mic at some venue across from Cats Cradle (can’t remember the name). When I got to the front door I told the bouncer I was performing, but he didn’t believe me. After trying to convince him for a few minuets and getting no where, I decided to just pay him the 5 dollars and go into the club. It was my first show ever so I didn’t really think much of it. I didn’t know the rules… maybe you had to pay to perform. This was also the first night I met L in Japanese. After performing the song, and getting a good response, I told Zano that the door man had charged me to get in. He laughed, brought me to the front, and got my money back.

Fast forward 7 years…

Last night was my first show in Virginia. Much like my first show in NC, I did not have my own set, my boy Flex Mathews just let me come and perform a song during his. I went out there solo, and when I got to the door I told the bouncer I was there to perform with Flex. Let me try to break down the conversation:

 Me: Hey, I’m here to perform with Flex.

Bouncer: What are you his hype man?

Me: No, I just came to perform a few songs with him.

Bouncer: Well then you have to pay $10 to get in.

Me: (laughing) Look can I talk to whoever’s show this is.

                      Bouncer goes to get the headliner (Impulse)

Impulse: Who are you?

Me: I’m here to perform with Flex, and I’d rather not have to pay $10 to rap.

                     Flex Mathews coming out from the back…

Flex: Ohhhh, that’s my man. Yo this is Addictive Nature; he is rocking with me tonight.

Impulse: Ohh word, I thought he was someone else. I was going to have to push him out by his face. You’re good, come on in.

What am I supposed to say to that? Am I supposed to be happy that this guy isn’t going to push me out by my face anymore? Hmmmm, I decided to just swallow my pride and let the music talk. The show ended up being fun. We rocked out; I got rid of a few CD’s and met some new people.

The fact that I don’t look like a “rapper” has gotten me into a lot of these situations. I wouldn’t have it any other way though. It lets me move like a ninja through this hip hop world- no one ever sees me coming.

Matt B!

Matt B is the vocalist in Addictive Nature, and he kills it. He is working on a solo album right now, as well as the new AN album which will be called “Smoothie.” Bam!

IRI Makes Learning Possible from Anywhere

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gN2VTyBwKXI&hl=en_US&fs=1&]

One of my first assignments at EDC was to interview all the Chiefs of Party (cool name for a position right?!). Simon Richmond, the COP of a project in Malawi, tells a story about a boy who didn’t want to miss school. Thanks to IRI, he didn’t have to.

Playing to Learn

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9NQHb37MIw&hl=en_US&fs=1&]

I put together this video for a presentation with the World Bank on Early Childhood Development, demonstrating how we (Education Development Center) use Interactive Radio Instruction to reach marginalized and disadvantaged children. Check out my post “Letter to Chapel Hill News & Observer” for more about how we do so. I think Information Communication Technologies is something I might try to pursue as a career. It requires you to be creative, using new/multi-media to help people who otherwise could not be reached. It also keeps me close to music, and puts me in a position where I feel like I have something of value to bring to the table. I’m just now learning how to put video stuff together, and plan on tackling graphic design next.

Later down the line, I want to start my own NPO (non profit organization) or NGO (non government organiztion) that centers around the idea of using media as a platform to educate. A place where musicians, actors, athletes, and anyone who has a skill and the desire to give back, but does not know how to do so, can participate. A creative consultant type of company that utilizes a persons talent to make a difference, without just asking people to throw money into a pot. I think the impact these people can have on an international scale has not fully been tapped into. Just an idea…

Seez Mics of Educated Consumers – “Broken Clock: Skeleton Key” ft. DJ Cam-One

FINALLY someone makes an album filled with songs that are thought provoking without forgetting to be entertaining. Seez Mics of Educated Consumers and DJ Cam-One teamed together  to release “Broken Clock: Skeleton Key” last week. I’ve seen Seez around DC a few times, at different shows and cyphers, and knew he was both talented and respected. This, however, was my first headphones experience of his work. “Headphones on, no distractions.”

This album reminds me of the type of lyricism that got me into hip-hop, mixed with a style that seems to be futuristic. In that sense it is both old school and ahead of its time. It’s filled with songs that you have to rewind a few times to fully understand, and layered with enough metaphors and analogies to make each listen through a different experience. The songs piece together to share an insight on human nature, creatively pointing out the ridiculousness of it .

Check out the album: “Broken Clock: Skeleton Key”

“It may be wrong along the way
but a Broken Clock is right twice a day.”

p.s. Seez Mics and I are working on a track called “Out of this World” for my new album, so check back in.
